The first ruling encharging Russia to compensate losses inflicted by the military aggression came into legal force

September 19, 2016, the ruling the first court ruling encharging the Russian Federation to compensate moral and material losses inflicted by the military aggression and occupation of the part of the territory of Ukraine to an internally displaced person from Donbass came into legal force.

This achievement is the result of Sila Prava legal struggle against the aggressor state.

On March 4, 2016, Irina Verigina applied to Goloseevo District Court of Kiev to recognize the legal fact that she was forced to relocate and become an IDP as a result of military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and occupation of the part of Lugansk region.

On March 18, 2016, the court recognized the legal fact of Irina Verigina`s forced relocation as a result of military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

On May 27, 2016, Irina Verigina issued legal proceedings to recover moral and material losses from the aggressor state – the Russian Federation.

On May 30, 2016, Goloseevo District Court of Kiev granted the application for injunctive relief in case of Irina Verigina vs Russian Federation, thereby arresting receivables and payments under the USD 3-billion loan extended by the Russian Federation to the Yanukovych regime in 2013.

The court considered the official statistics: over two million citizens of Ukraine – immediate relatives of victims of military activities, military personnel and civilians who sustained physical or psychological injuries, military personnel who suffered from captivity, civilians who suffered from illegal detention, internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the occupied territories of Crimea, Sevastopol, and Donbass, and citizens who lost private property – were inflicted by the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

The claim and all supporting documents were prepared by Sila Prava legal team who appeared for Irina Verigina.

On August 23, 2016, the court found to charge the Russian Federation in favor of Irina Verigina:

  • compensation for material losses – 114 750 UAH (equivalent to 4,625 euro);
  • compensation for moral losses – 985 950 UAH (equivalent to 35,000 euro);
  • court fee – 7 250 UAH.

Soon, Sila Prava will initiate enforcement of the ruling that, presumably, might take approximately a year.
